To take card payments with Gravity Payments on POSable, switch Gravity Payments on in API Settings → Payments. Enter your OID and Auth Token from your Gravity Dashboard. Then assign each card reader to a till in App Devices using the reader’s device name. Gravity Payments supplies your terminal (a PAX or Clover reader) and connects through its emergepay platform. Tips are always offered on the reader, and credit card surcharging is available if Gravity enables it on your account. Gravity Payments is for businesses in the United States. This guide is for US owners and managers setting up Gravity card payments.
Important:
- POSable works with one card provider at a time, chosen in API Settings → Payments.
- Gravity Payments card payments and card refunds need the till to be online. If the internet drops, keep trading with cash and take cards again when you’re back online.
- POSable adds no markup to your card fees. Your rates are agreed directly with Gravity Payments.
Why it matters
- No double entry. The till sends the exact amount to your Gravity reader.
- One reader per till. Each till sends payments to the reader you assign to it, so there’s no mix-up at busy counters.
- Tips and surcharging built in. The reader always offers tips, and when surcharging applies, the till shows a disclaimer to read to the customer before payment.
- Refunds from the till. Full and partial card refunds go back through the reader, with no need to log in to Gravity.

Step-by-step setup
1. Get your Gravity Payments account and reader
Open your merchant account with Gravity Payments. Gravity supplies your card reader, either a PAX or a Clover model, and tells you which one you’ll use. Your processing rates are agreed directly with Gravity.
2. Get your OID and Auth Token
In your Gravity Dashboard, find your:
- OID
- Auth Token
Warning: Treat your Auth Token like a password. Don’t share it by email or post it anywhere public.
3. Switch Gravity Payments on in POSable
- Sign in to the POSable dashboard.
- Open API Settings → Payments.
- Switch Gravity Payments on.
- Enter your OID and Auth Token, then save.
Note: You can also choose Gravity Payments during Quick Start when you first set up your account. Until your account is ready, you can trade with cash.
4. Assign each reader to a till
Each till sends payments to its own reader. To assign one:
- Get the reader’s device name from Gravity Payments. It’s usually a combination of the device model name and serial number, for example
A920-5590. - In the POSable dashboard, open App Devices.
- Find the till and enter the reader’s full device name.
- Repeat for each till.
Tip: Name your tills in App Devices first (for example “Front Counter”), and label each reader with its till’s name.
To move a reader to a different till, first remove it from its current device in App Devices, using the action button. You can only do this in the dashboard.
5. Optional: turn on credit card surcharging
Surcharging needs both of these:
- Gravity support enables surcharging on your Gravity account.
- You switch on the surcharging toggle in POSable’s API Settings.
Important: The POSable toggle on its own doesn’t turn surcharging on. Gravity controls whether a surcharge applies and how much it is.
How surcharging works at the till:
- Before the card payment is taken, the till always shows a surcharge disclaimer, including the surcharge amount, for staff to read out to the customer.
- If a surcharge is applied, it’s printed on the receipt.
- Surcharging only applies to credit cards, never debit cards, and follows the surcharging rules for your state, in line with US law.
- The surcharge amount or percentage comes from Gravity. POSable has no input into it, and staff can’t change it at the till.
To change or stop surcharging, contact Gravity support.
6. Take a test payment
- On the till, add an item and press Card.
- Pay on the reader assigned to that till.
- Wait for the till to show the payment is complete, then check the sale appears in your dashboard.
Test each till, and test again after any reader update.
Taking card payments with Gravity Payments
- Add the items to the sale.
- Press Card. The amount is sent to the till’s assigned reader.
- If a surcharge applies, read the disclaimer shown on the till, including the surcharge amount, to the customer.
- The customer pays on the reader. Tips are always offered: the reader shows recommended tip amounts or zero, and the customer chooses.
- The till records the result when the payment completes. Tips and any surcharge are shown on the receipt.
Split payments: press Split Payment, enter the cash amount first, and the remaining balance is sent to the reader. See Cash and card payments.
Refunding a Gravity Payments card payment
You can refund from any till, and Gravity Payments supports both full and partial refunds.
- On the till, press Recent Orders. Today’s sales are listed, with the last 5 shown first. Use the page controls for older sales, or the calendar button to pick another date.
- Or scan the barcode on the customer’s receipt to bring up the sale straight away.
- Select the sale and follow the on-screen refund instructions to refund the whole sale or part of it.
- A manager authorises the refund with their PIN.
- The refund is sent to the reader.
Split payments are refunded by the method used, up to the amount paid that way. For example, if a $15 sale was paid $10 cash and $5 card, no more than $5 can go back to the card.
Note: Card refunds need the till to be online. See How to refund a sale on the POSable till for stock, loyalty points and more.
Troubleshooting
The amount doesn’t appear on the reader
- Check the reader is switched on, charged and connected.
- Check the till is online. Gravity payments can’t be sent while the till is offline.
- Check Gravity Payments is switched on in API Settings → Payments, and that the OID and Auth Token match your Gravity Dashboard.
- Check this till has a reader assigned in App Devices, and that the device name is entered exactly as Gravity supplied it.
The surcharge isn’t being added
- Ask Gravity support to confirm surcharging is enabled on your account. The POSable toggle alone doesn’t activate it.
A replacement till can’t take card payments
- Assign the reader to the new device in App Devices. Reader assignments don’t move across automatically.
Moving a reader to another till
- Remove it from its current device first, in App Devices in the dashboard, using the action button. Then assign it to the other till.
